〇海士の田んぼ
中ノ島（海士町）、西ノ島、知夫里島の３島からなる島前地域の中で、唯一本格的な稲作が行われているのが海士町です。
その理由は大きく２つあります。
１つ目は、中ノ島だけが比較的平坦な地形を持っていることです。大昔の火山活動によって島が形成された際、流れ出た溶岩が海へ広がり、内陸部に平地が生まれたと考えられています。
２つ目は、海士町が豊かな湧き水に恵まれていることです。海士町には、「天川の水」と呼ばれる湧水があり、環境省が選定する「名水百選」にも選ばれています。
こうした自然条件に支えられ、海士町には美しい田園風景が広がっています。ここで育てられるお米は、島前地域の人々の食と暮らしを支える大切な恵みです。
田んぼのまわりには、季節ごとにさまざまな鳥や虫たちが集まります。人々の暮らしにも、生きものたちの営みにも欠かせない、海士町の田園が奏でる音色に、ぜひ耳を澄ませてみてください。
Rice Fields of Ama
Among the Dōzen Islands — Nakanoshima (Ama Town), Nishinoshima, and Chiburijima — Ama Town is the only island where full-scale rice farming is practiced.
There are two main reasons for this.
The first is that Nakanoshima alone has relatively flat terrain. Long ago, volcanic activity formed the island, and it is believed that flowing lava spread into the sea, creating plains in the island’s interior.
The second reason is Ama Town’s abundance of fresh spring water. One famous spring, known as “Amanokawa Water,” has been selected as one of Japan’s “100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters” by the Ministry of the Environment.
Supported by these natural conditions, Ama Town is home to beautiful rural landscapes filled with rice fields. The rice grown here is an important blessing that supports the food and daily lives of the people living throughout the Dōzen Islands.
Around the rice fields, many kinds of birds and insects gather throughout the changing seasons. The countryside of Ama Town sustains both human life and the rhythms of nature alike. As you visit, take a moment to listen carefully to the gentle sounds of these living landscapes.
